The world is fabulously diverse. One way to acknowledge the multitude of experiences, identities and lived experiences of millions of humans around the world is to acknowledge LGBTQ+. But what is LGBTQ+, who is included in LGBTQ+ and why does it even matter? This blog is intended to help you have a basic and digestible understanding of what the basics of LGBTQ+ are, whether you have no knowledge of this or you want to feel more equipped to support your friends, family or communities. So take a deep breath and open your mind, let's go!
What is LGBTQ+?
LGBTQ+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer or Questioning, and the + sign represents inclusion of many other unique and identified characteristics in addition to the first 5 letters. Each letter group is loosely defined based on sexual orientation (who do they feel sexual attraction to) or gender identity (who do they identify as). The + sign indicates inclusion of other sexual orientations, names, identities, etc.; such as asexual, pansexual, intersex, non-binary, etc.

Breaking Down the Letters
Onwards, we will define each of the letters of LGBTQ+, with shorter explanations:
Lesbian- A woman who has sexual attractions for women.
Gay- A man who has sexual attractions for men. It can also simply be used as a general term for anybody who has sexual attractions for same gender persons regardless of gender.
Bisexual- A person who has sexual attractions for more than one gender (most for women and men).
Transgender- A person whose gender identity does not match the sex they were assigned at birth. For instance, these are persons who were assigned male at birth (usually boys) but identify and present as females.
Queer/Questioning- Queer can be used as an overall term for many people who are using Queer instead of some label in which they (may/may not) identify/Questioning is what persons use when they are in the process of figuring out who they are and/or what their orientation is.
+ (The Plus sign)- Refers to the any and all other identities to include: pansexuality (meaning a person who has attractions for most everybody or anybody regardless of gender), asexuality (which is a person who has little or no sexual attractions), non-binary , gender fluid, intersex.

Significance of the LGBTQ+ Community
For a long time, LGBTQ+ communities have faced marginalization, discrimination, and even violence just for existing in online chatting too. But there is a growing positive awareness globally about identity and acceptance, an increasing amount of people are accepting of 'love is love', and are recognizing the complexity and fluidity so we do not have fit neatly into a binary box either. The LGBTQ+ community is here to allow spaces for people to be who they want to be, with no manipulation from society, no shame, and no fear of being judged by others. The LGBTQ+ community does not only exist for pride events and rainbow flags, it exists to protect the rights and dignity of human existence and the right to just be.
When someone comes out to someone in relation to LGBTQ+ matters, that person is showing, or sharing a part of their identity that they have otherwise kept to themselves, because they would have potentially been unsure how the other person was going to react, how they would be rejected in the form of negative reinforcement, or what they believe is safe as a form of exclusion from being rejected.

What is the difference between sexual orientation and gender?
There are many different things people usually get confused by and use or apply interchangeably. Luckily they are not and they do have definitions. Gender Identity is the sense of self of a person, and how he/she/they see themselves? Are you male, female, both or neither, or something else?
The gender identity of some trans (transgender) individuals (people) may not align with the biological sex of their assigned sex or and/or gender identity assigned at birth. Some individuals may identify as non-binary meaning their identity does not only reflect male (or female) more like a continuum. Gender identity may be fluid for some individuals and/or may or may not change throughout their lifetime. Gender identity is how an individual understands and perceives themselves; their gender.

What Problems Does the LGBTQ+ Community Face?
LGBTQ+ persons have to fight every day for respect and rights at school, church, clubs, workplace, and government, which are automatically granted to a hetero-cisgender individual. The issues this community faces are more than just the occasional ill-timed joke, for these studies have shown that mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety are more prevalent among LGBTQ+ individuals, mainly because of the lack of a conducive support system, especially for youth, that could have embraced safety and acceptance. This is just one reason why becoming an ally should matter.
An ally is a person who stands up for and speaks against detriment toward LGBTQ+ individuals that is NOT queer themselves. Can be very simple stuff like standing up on Facebook or Twitter when someone makes a homophobic joke, struggling to get truly good workplace policies and behaviors put in place, or even just being there for a friend when they want to talk. The big or small actions by an ally do matter.
Why It Matters to Celebrate Pride Month
Perhaps you have heard that it is commemorated in June. That month honors the LGBTQ+ community and recalls the history of their fight for rights and equality. Pride began as a protest, not merely a celebration. It recalls events like when the Stonewall Riots occurred in 1969 and therefore became a symbol of resistance against police harassment in New York City. It has come to be over time as a moment of visibility, sharing happiness, and offering support. But aside from parades and parties, Pride calls to mind that every random individual deserves freedom, love, and respect to be themselves.

How One Could Be An Excellent Ally Or Friend
You don't need to be the all-knowing best friend. All it requires is that you are willing to listen, learn, and act on behalf of other people. If somebody is willing to show you, then you can politely ask them questions.
Educate yourself by means of books, the internet, or community experience. When confronted by uncompassionate or uncultured statements, challenge them. Inform your LGBTQ+ relatives and friends how much you care for them and can be your genuine self while being around them. Above all else, practice kind and courteous dealings with others.
Final Words
In the end of it all, LGBTQ+ is human love, identity, and dignity. Human beings are free to be who they are and not be afraid or ashamed of it. How great a method to unite the world and bring the world into a safer, more loving, and more welcoming place to get to know what LGBTQ+ is, who it is, and why it is. You don't need to know everything-you simply need an open heart and the willingness to treat other human beings the way you'd like to be treated. Because when we make every single human being feel so welcome and so loved for just being themselves, we get to live in a bigger, more wondrous world.
